My poor baby

This morning, the kids were outside playing at the neighbor's and Kimberley put the tube from a tee ball set in her mouth, slipped, and took a hunk out of the roof of her mouth as thick and big around as a nickel.
I met her dad and the kids at the ER and spent the afternoon there. First they weren't going to give her stitches because of the risk of infection, then they were, then they decided to call the ear nose and throat specialist to have a look since it was so far back in her mouth. He told me that if it were his baby or grandbaby, he wouldn't want it stitched. Because of where it was and how young she is, they would have to put her under to do it and it didn't seem like it was worth the risk for one stitch. He said it would leave a bigger scar than it would with a stitch, but that wouldn't matter anyway, obviously. It's not like anyone will see it and she won't feel it because it was almost all the way back. Most of it couldn't be pulled back together because the skin was gone on a lot of the wound.
So, instead, she will be on a liquid diet with mostly ice cream and popsicles to reduce swelling, and tylenol with codeine. She's in a lot of pain when the medicine wears off, but she'll be okay. It was just really scary. I about had a heart attack when I got the phone call. My kids don't get hurt bad enough to go to the ER, well almost never anyway, so when they do, I'm beside myself.
I just hope they take this as a lesson to not put toys in their mouths. She says she never wants to go outside again. I'm sure she'll change her mind, but I can't say I blame her right now.
